Wrestling with God

Jacob Wrestling

I have been reading some books by Rebecca Brown about spiritual warfare. I had to share a testimony of hers that blew my mind.

She was in a period in her life where she was fighting a lot for  friend of hers who was in and out of hospital (Let’s call her Nancy). Nancy had been involved in Satanism from a young age, but by God’s grace she met Rebecca who led her to give her life to Jesus. Ever since Nancy left the cult, it was a spiritual war, the enemy wanted to destroy her and Rebecca. One way they also did this was to cause various illnesses to Nancy. The result was that she spent a lot of time going in and out of hospital, a lot of times with illnesses that medical experts could not identify.

But this is the point of the testimony I wanted to share. One day Rebecca cried out to God, asking Him why they were not receiving any victory over the situation. The attacks from the satanic cult members were increasing and nancy’s health was deteriorating. She asked the Lord to at least bless them with the release of Nancy from the hospital. God answered her with this question,

“How much do you value a blessing from me?”

Thereafter, the Holy Spirit flooded Rebecca’s mind with this verse

Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the [g]breaking of day. 25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He [h]touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob’s hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him. 26 And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.”

But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!”

27 So He said to him, “What is your name?”

He said, “Jacob.”

28 And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but [i]Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.”

29 Then Jacob asked, saying, “Tell me Your name, I pray.”

And He said, “Why is it that you ask about My name?” And He blessed him there.

30 So Jacob called the name of the place [j]Peniel: “For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved.”

Then the Lord asked her, “Tell me, child, do you value a blessing from me enough to wrestle with me a whole night for it?”

The Lord answered Rebecca’s prayer the next week.

Maybe you are also in a similar situation, you have been fighting some battle for months, even years now and you don’t seem to have any victory over the situation. You have been crying out to God for Him to intervene because you just can’t take it anymore. You do not know if you can survive another day . Maybe you should wrestle with God for that deliverance, for that blessing, for that breakthrough that you desperately need, as Jacob did.

So what exactly did Rebecca do that night?

She read Scripture, she praised and worshiped God, she spent time pondering the things of God, she was on her feet, on her knees even on her face before the Lord. She asked the Lord to reveal hidden sin in her life and she repented from them, she prayed through her petitions, she spent time in His presence, she cried tears and brought the situation to Him.

Have you ever wrestled with God? I have and now I cannot get enough of His presence. I want more, I need more. And God has been very faithful in answering my prayer.

Be blessed
